The Challenge

The most common reason a corporate finish fails early has nothing to do with the paint and everything to do with what it was applied over. A coating laid onto a contaminated, friable, or unsound substrate cannot adhere, no matter how good the product — and the failure, when it comes, looks like a paint problem but is a preparation problem. On landmark corporate buildings the substrates are varied: plastered masonry, concrete, previously coated surfaces with unknown compatibility, and structural steel each demand a different preparation, and getting it wrong on any of them undermines the warranty written over it.

A quick wash-down and a coat of paint is what produces the failures Corporate Painters is most often called to remediate. The substrate has to be assessed and prepared to a defined, recorded standard before the system goes on — otherwise everything above it is built on sand.

Each surface is assessed for type, condition, contamination, and existing-coating compatibility, and a preparation method is specified to bring it to the standard the coating system requires. That standard is not a matter of opinion: surface-preparation grades are defined by ISO 8501, which sets the visual cleanliness a substrate must reach, and the prepared surface is verified against it rather than judged by eye.

Where the system depends on adhesion to a difficult substrate — a previously coated wall, or steel — adhesion is verified to ASTM D3359 so compatibility is proven, not assumed. The specified film of the coating system is then built and verified to ISO 2808 on a substrate that has been properly prepared to carry it. The result is a finish that holds because the ground beneath it was engineered, not improvised.

Preparation is delivered as recorded evidence, because it is the foundation the warranty rests on. Each commission produces a substrate assessment by area; a preparation specification matched to each substrate type; surface-preparation grades verified and recorded to ISO 8501; adhesion test results to ASTM D3359 where compatibility is critical; and the preparation sign-off that gates the coating stage in the multi-stage QC regime. Dry-film thickness of the coating system above it is verified to ISO 2808. The client inherits proof that the warranted finish sits on sound, documented ground.
